OMS diz que vacinas contra covid-19 podem não ser tão eficazes

As vacinas contra a covid-19 estão sendo desenvolvidas e podem oferecer proteção por apenas alguns meses ou até mesmo nem funcionar. A informação foi divulgada pelo diretor-geral da Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, nesta segunda-feira (03). "Não existe bala de prata no momento e talvez nunca exista", disse ele.

Atualmente, há 164 imunizações em desenvolvimento. Apesar de muitas já estarem na última fase de testes, Ghebreyesus destacou que talvez nenhuma delas ofereça a proteção necessária contra o Sars-CoV-2, vírus causador da covid-19. Segundo ele, isso pode ocorrer devido à velocidade na qual as fórmulas estão sendo criadas, questão que será solucionada somente após a conclusão dos testes.

Isolamento social e outras medidas

Na falta de certezas de que alguma vacina será realmente eficaz, a OMS reforçou a necessidade de aplicar o conjunto de medidas contra a covid-19. Nesse sentido, os países devem identificar os casos através da testagem em massa, rastrear contatos e promover o isolamento social, que continua sendo a arma mais potente contra a doença.

Além de respeitar a quarentena, é necessário que os indivíduos higienizem as mãos constantemente e utilizem máscaras que cubram nariz e boca. "Se fizermos tudo, se adotarmos uma abordagem abrangente, podemos mudar isso", pontuou Ghebreyesus.

Em 31 de julho, o comitê de emergência da agência decidiu manter a categoria de emergência global de saúde pública para a pandemia. A agilidade dos estudos deu um ar de otimismo para a população, o que pode ser alterado pela declaração do diretor-geral da OMS.

Para o virologista da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Flávio da Fonseca, os estudos estão sendo conduzidos com cautela. "Temos no momento várias vacinas candidatas que estão em fase clínica, algumas em fase 3. A fala vem em cima da questão de ser teste e da taxa de sucesso das que entram em fase clínica, em humanos, ser de 10%", disse ele.

No entanto, as vacinas levam 10 anos ou mais entre o início das avaliações e sua distribuição. O especialista afirmou que a mais rápida até hoje foi a de ebola, produzida em 5 anos.
